On September 14, 2026, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) finalized a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a major Japanese automotive manufacturer to co--develop "second--generation" sodium--ion battery cells. This collaboration aims to enhance the energy density of sodium--ion chemistry to 180 Wh/kg, specifically targeting the "mass--market" compact electric vehicle (EV) segment. The agreement includes a roadmap for technical validation beginning in January 2027, which is projected to facilitate a 25% reduction in battery pack costs compared to current lithium--iron--phosphate (LFP) alternatives.
