On October 30, 2026, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) agreed to acquire AU Optronics' (AUO) Taichung Phase 2 facility in the Central Taiwan Science Park for NT$38.8 billion (approximately US$1.2 billion). The transaction secures approximately 166,000 ping (429,000 square meters) of usable cleanroom and industrial infrastructure across Gen 5 and Gen 7.5 fabrication sites. TSMC plans to begin retrofitting the facility in the second quarter of 2027 to expand advanced packaging capacity, including CoWoS and next--generation panel--level packaging, addressing critical supply bottlenecks driven by surging artificial intelligence accelerator demand.
