On June 30, 2026, the United States, Mexico, and Canada officially commenced the mandatory 'Six--Year Joint Review' of the USMCA trade agreement in Washington, D.C. Despite the U.S. administration missing a preliminary notification deadline, the review proceeded with a focus on modernizing digital trade protocols and automotive rules of origin. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer characterized the review as a "strategic rebalancing" required to address shifts in the global industrial landscape. The outcome of these negotiations will determine whether the agreement is extended for an additional 16--year term or if it will trigger a series of annual reviews to address unresolved trade imbalances.
