Low friction coatings tech news

On October 8, 2026, researchers published a study in the journal Friction detailing the development of superhard, low--friction titanium carbide (TiCₓ) coatings engineered for GCr15 bearing steel. Synthesized via a hybrid process pairing magnetic--filtered cathodic arc ion sputtering with magnetron sputtering, the coating incorporates a functionally graded Cr/CrN/CrTiN/TiCN interlayer that mitigates interfacial shear stress and resolves chronic adhesion failures on industrial steel substrates. By tuning the carbon target DC current, the optimized TiCₓ coating delivers a hardness of 43 GPa and maintains a low coefficient of friction of ~0.18 under ambient sliding conditions. Microstructural analysis confirmed that the wear--reduction mechanism relies on Ti--promoted sp² carbon graphitization paired with the in--situ formation of a stabilizing TiO₂ transfer film, offering a viable surface--engineering pathway for next--generation, high--load mechanical bearings.
