On October 8, 2026, engineers from ASML Holding NV and optical systems partner Carl Zeiss disclosed in a peer--reviewed paper published in the Journal of Micro/Nanopatterning, Materials and Metrology that a successor lithography platform, dubbed "Hyper NA", could be technically viable within approximately a decade. The proposed Hyper NA architecture aims to print circuitry features as fine as 5 nanometers—over one--third smaller than current High--NA EUV capabilities—while reusing substantial portions of existing extreme ultraviolet infrastructure. ASML confirmed that exploratory development has commenced, though the company has not yet committed to commercial manufacturing amid unresolved technical hurdles and long--term economic considerations for chipmakers.
