Microsoft announced on September 10, 2026, a definitive agreement to acquire Lumina AI, a pioneer in energy--efficient model compression, for $1.2 billion. The acquisition is designed to accelerate Microsoft’s "On--Device AI" strategy, facilitating the execution of large language models directly on Windows 11 PCs and mobile devices without cloud reliance. The transaction is expected to close by November 30, 2026. Furthermore, the company confirmed its Fall Hardware Event will take place on October 2, 2026, to debut new AI--powered Surface devices, followed by a technical showcase of the integrated Lumina technology at Microsoft Ignite on November 16, 2026.
