On July 31, 2026, the governments of Brazil and Argentina ratified the "South Atlantic Monetary Accord," an emergency treaty establishing a common digital currency, the "Sur," for all cross--border trade settlements. This policy intervention is designed to insulate the Mercosur region from the hyper--inflationary pressures and dollar liquidity shortages triggered by the ongoing West Asia War and the Federal Reserve's aggressive monetary tightening. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva characterized the initiative as a "strategic imperative to safeguard regional trade stability and reduce systemic reliance on volatile external financial architectures."
