Discovery projects
On July 17, 2026, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published an updated strategic framework for its "Strategy 2026 to 2031," formalizing the "R&D Missions Accelerator Programme." This framework establishes a new project management standard for high--uncertainty scientific exploration, prioritizing "Multidisciplinary Synthesis Gates" over traditional linear milestones. The methodology is supported by a £500 million "Mission--Driven Capital" fund, which utilizes a dynamic governance model to allow for the rapid reallocation of resources as technical breakthroughs or pivots occur within the discovery lifecycle.
