On June 1, 2026, TSMC confirmed the commencement of construction for its third semiconductor fabrication facility in Kumamoto, Japan (Fab 3). The expansion is bolstered by a ¥900 billion (approximately US$5.8 billion) subsidy from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). This facility will utilize 6nm and 7nm process nodes to serve the growing demand for advanced automotive and industrial silicon. CEO C.C. Wei stated that Fab 3 is essential for "supporting the long--term silicon needs of our strategic partners in the automotive industry." The move is a key component of TSMC's global capacity diversification strategy, aimed at mitigating regional supply chain risks.
