On October 14, 2026, Chinese automaker Changan Automobile and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced plans to expand their joint venture, Times Changan, to achieve a total battery cell manufacturing capacity of 75 GWh. The initiative involves an estimated investment of RMB 5 billion (approximately $750 million) to build a 700,000--square--meter facility in an industrial zone situated between Chongqing and Sichuan Province. The new site will add 25 GWh to supply traction batteries for Changan brands including Avatr, Deepal, and Nevo, while also establishing dedicated engineering lines and joint research for all--solid--state and sodium--ion battery cells. Operational launch of the expansion facility is scheduled for 2027, with the capacity target expected to be reached within three years.
