On August 20, 2026, the governments of Japan, Australia, and India formally ratified the "Indo--Pacific Maritime Security Treaty" (IPMST) during a trilateral summit in Tokyo. This landmark defense agreement establishes a permanent joint naval task force and a $15 billion sovereign investment fund dedicated to the development of integrated satellite surveillance and undersea detection systems. The treaty is designed to ensure the "uninterrupted flow of global commerce" through the South China Sea and the Malacca Strait.
