Tesla officially commenced initial production of its Optimus humanoid robot at the Fremont, California factory on August 28, 2026. The company repurposed manufacturing space previously dedicated to the Model S and Model X lines to accommodate the new robotics assembly. CEO Elon Musk characterized the production ramp as a "substantial challenge" due to the lack of an existing supply chain for humanoid components. This milestone marks the transition of the Optimus project from a research and development phase to a manufacturing--ready platform, with the Fremont facility serving as a pilot for higher--volume production planned at Gigafactory Texas. Simultaneously, Tesla has discontinued its Solar Roof product to concentrate resources on higher--scale energy products like the Megapack.
