Low friction coatings tech news
On July 22, 2026, TerraDrill Coatings announced the commercial availability of "Bore--Slick Ultra," a specialized low--friction coating engineered for geothermal drilling bits and downhole tools. The coating utilizes a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) composite matrix that maintains a friction coefficient of 0.07 under extreme pressure and temperatures exceeding 350°C. By reducing torque requirements and preventing "bit balling" in high--temperature rock formations, the technology increases drilling ROP (Rate of Penetration) by 22% and extends tool life in harsh subterranean environments.
