On October 16, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved a revised production plan for TSMC's second fabrication facility in Kikuyo, Kumamoto Prefecture, authorizing the site to manufacture advanced 3--nanometer logic chips. The revision transitions the fab from its previously planned 6nm--to--12nm processes to leading--edge 3nm technology, establishing Japan's first domestic 3nm manufacturing base. With total capital expenditure projected to exceed $15.7 billion and qualifying for up to ¥645.15 billion (approximately $4.1 billion) in Japanese government subsidies, the facility is slated to launch with an initial capacity of 6,000 wafers per month and target first shipments by December 2028.
