On June 18, 2026, researchers Henri Hussinki, Patrick Mikalef, and Paavo Ritala published a benchmark study in Knowledge Management Research & Practice titled "Generative artificial intelligence and organizational knowledge management: four alternative configurations." Grounded in the knowledge--based view and sociotechnical systems theory, the research addresses the growing enterprise risk of unanchored artificial intelligence deployments where generative models operate disconnected from core organizational repositories. The authors define four structural configurations to bridge corporate knowledge assets and generative capabilities: (1) GAI as an operational moderator that scales existing knowledge--based value creation, (2) GAI as an organizational mediator converting latent institutional information into business performance, (3) KM practices serving as an active governance and moderating filter over generative outputs, and (4) holistic co--evolution where enterprise taxonomies, tacit human expertise, and autonomous AI pipelines dynamically reinforce one another. The study provides strategic leadership with a formal architectural roadmap to transition from fragmented generative experiments toward governed, high--impact enterprise intelligence systems.
