On October 30, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen concluded the 21st EU–Canada Summit in Montreal, formally launching the "Canada–EU Alliance for the Future." The bilateral pact establishes a framework for a joint economic security and prosperity space spanning six core areas: trade and regulatory coordination, critical raw materials and energy security, digital technology research, financial market integration, defense preparedness, and civil ties. In their joint declaration, both sides initiated a joint feasibility assessment on Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe and committed to define terms for an ever--closer association short of full EU membership by the next bilateral summit.
