Low friction coatings tech news

On August 30, 2026, AutoNano Coatings announced the commercial launch of "DriveSmooth X," a high--performance low--friction coating specifically engineered for internal combustion engine (ICE) components, including pistons and cylinder liners. The technology utilizes a diamond--like carbon (DLC) matrix doped with molybdenum and tungsten to achieve a friction coefficient of 0.02 under high--pressure conditions. By reducing parasitic energy losses within the engine by up to 18%, the coating improves fuel efficiency by 5% and significantly lowers CO2 emissions, extending the operational lifespan of traditional and hybrid powertrains. AutoNano Coatings will showcase the technology at the Global Automotive Engineering Expo in Detroit starting September 15, 2026.
