On May 26, 2026, the African Union and the European Union ratified the "Trans--Saharan Green Energy Pact," a €45 billion strategic investment framework aimed at developing large--scale green hydrogen production facilities across North Africa. The agreement facilitates the construction of a dedicated subsea pipeline to transport hydrogen to Southern Europe, directly supporting the EU's decarbonization targets. AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stated the partnership "redefines the Saharan region as a central pillar of global energy security." The pact includes significant funding for local infrastructure and a joint security protocol to safeguard critical energy assets against regional volatility.
